JonBenét: Unsolved Murder

JonBenét Ramsey was just six-years-old when she was found dead in her home in Boulder, Colorado. She was found in the basement by her father on December 26th, 1996. To this day, nobody has been charged for her murder but early suspicion did fall on her family.

Parents, John and Patricia 'Patsy' Ramsey along with older brother Burke would be acquitted after DNA at the scene was found belonging to a male unrelated to the Ramsey family.

Not everyone believes this though and some think that the evidence is overwhelming and firmly believe she was murdered by a member of her family.

--- Timeline of events ---

*Disclaimer - I did not list ALL of the events as it would be a very long list so I have taken key parts that I think are the most important.

December 26, 1996: JonBenét Ramsey is murdered and Patsy says that she has found a ransom note demanding $118,000 for her return. Later that day, her body is found in the family's home in the basement wrapped in a blanket.

January 4, 1997: Reports reveal that JonBenét skull had been fractured and the ransom note came from a notepad from the Ramsey's' own home.

December 1997: A year on from her murder, Boulder police indicate her parents will remain under "an umbrella of suspicion" and will be questioned again.

October 13, 1999: Alex Hunter, a District Attorney states that no indictments will be issued due to a lack of evidence in the case.

April 2003: Judge Julie Carnes in Atlanta dismisses a federal civil suit against John and Patsy Ramsey after concluding that evidence supports the theory of an intruder murdering JonBenét and not that her mother, Patsy, was involved.

December 2003: DNA found at the scene is given to the FBI database. Earlier blood tests show that the sample was from a male who was unrelated to the Ramsey's.

June 24, 2006: Patsy Ramsey dies of Ovarian Cancer (Age 49)

July 9, 2008: Boulder County District Attorney, Macy Lay, says that no one in the Ramsey family considered a suspect and formally apologizes to John Ramsey for the doubt that was cast on him and his family for nearly 12 years.

January 27, 2013: The Boulder Daily Camera reported that in 1999, a grand jury voted to indict John and Patsy Ramsey on the charges of child abuse, resulted in her death. But Boulder District Attorney, Alex Hunter decided there was not enough evidence to file charges and did not sign the indictment.

--- Theories ---

Strange Circumstances
The police supposedly asked the parents and their friends to check the house again as it was so big. The father then went to the basement and his daughters body was there. He picked her up and went upstairs. This was a major no-no as the crime scene was now tampered with, not to mention the extra DNA in the house because of the extra people. Anyone could have hid or messed with any evidence without the police knowing.
I believe the Boulder Police should have done more to cordon off the crime scene.

There was no signs of forced entry and no footprints in the snow leading to the home. However, the intruder could have walked around the snow avoiding leaving footprints. The window was also broken in the basement but John thought the area they lived in was safe enough. We are not sure how big or small the broken window was but people think the intruder could have gotten in the house this way.

Suspects

Many think that the murder was someone from the Beauty Pageant shows that JonBenét  went to.  Theorists' say the pageant shows could have attracted paedophiles as they were little girls dressed up in costumes who were made to look older than they were.

Ransom Note

At the scene of the crime, there was a 3 page long  ransom note that was later discovered to be written on a notepad from the Ramsey's kitchen. Why was it written on the family's own notepad? This would mean the intruder would possibly have had to sit down and write the note whilst the family were sleeping, either before or after she was killed. But why would they risk anyone seeing them?

The ransom note also demanding that they pay $118,000 for her return. This was actually Johns Christmas bonus so it is strange that they picked this number. Did they know how much he earned? Was it someone from his work?
The Ramsey family were also very rich people so it is strange they chose this amount of money when they could have chosen a much higher sum of money.

Experts also looked at the letter and compared the writing to samples from John and Patsy's own handwriting. They ruled out John but could not rule out of prove Patsy's sample. Although some of the letters looked similar to the way the ransom note was written.

At the end of the note the letters SBTC were written and to this day. nobody knows what it means.

Points Of Interest
It was said that she was strangled with a garrotte which was part of Patsy's paint brush hobby kit. She was also hit with a heavy duty object . Police have not confirmed this but they believe the torchlight in the house (which was not claimed to belong to them) was the likely object.

The autopsy showed that 2-4 hours after she was hit on the head, she was strangled which is believed to be the cause of death.

Duct tape was over her mouth and fibre traces of Patsy's sweater was found on the tape.

Many criticised the Ramsey's for putting her death on December 25th rather than the 26th (when they found her). How would they know when she died? Surley they would have put the date they found her?

After JonBenét was found, the family stopped cooperating with police and started t do interviews with the media when they were advised not to.

After the frantic 911 call the mother made, she thought she had hung up and after people listening to the tape, many claim they claim that can hear a third voice at the end meaning somebody else was in the house, or it could have been Burke. This raises the question of who was the potential third person? Why were they there? Why was it kept a secret? If it was Burke. why did they lie and say he was asleep?

A bowl of Pineapple and milk was found in the house which was JonBenét's favourite dessert. Fingerprints show that the only people who touched it was Burke and Patsy. However, the version of events don't add up as in JonBenét's autopsy report, it says there was newly eaten, undigested Pineapple in her system, yet according to the family, she was asleep in the car and they brought her in and took her to bed after the party.

A man named Michael supposedly confessed to a co-worker he killed her and then two months later, he killed himself. There was not enough evidence to prove that he actually did it though.

There was also DNA evidence from an unidentified person and DNA from someone under her fingernails. The DNA is not from the Ramsey's though which should be pointed out.

Burke
At the time he was 9-years-old, but he apparently was sleeping and didn't wake up during the search. He remember his mother shouting "Where's my baby?" and the police shining flashlights.  Burke could have easily been so distraught by the media and police scrutiny over the years but he it is strange that he is smiling throughout. See the interview Burke did with Dr. Phil here.
