Born in July 1961 as Diana Frances Spencer, she was part of a British noble family with royal ancestry. On July 29th 1981, Lady Diana married Charles [Prince of Wales] and a massive 750 million people watched worldwide.
In the days following her death, the public left a sea of flowers and tributes outside the gates of Kensington Palace. Her funeral was held on September 6 1997 at Westminster Abbey and was broadcast on British television, attracting an audience of 32.1 million viewers.
How did she die?
The Princess of Wales died in a 60mph car crash in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel in Paris shortly after leaving the Hôtel Ritz Paris.
In the car with her was bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, Ritz chauffeur-driver, Henri Paul and her boyfriend, Dodi Al-Fayed. Three of those in the car died but Trevor Jones was the only one to survive. He can't remember what happened in the moments leading up to or during the crash which makes it hard to determine what actually happened, but an inquest into the death in 2008 blamed paparazzi photographers for chasing her car and blamed driver Henri Paul, who was allegedly speeding and over the drink-driving limit.
Diana's life in her own words...
After marrying Charles in 1981, things soon started to take a turn for the worst. In 1992, it was revealed both Diana and Charles were having an affair. Charles with Camilla Parker-Bowles and Diana with James Hewitt.
During their marriage, both had two son's, Prince William and Harry.
In an interview with the BBC, Diana said she was aware of the affair saying: "There were three of us in the marriage. It was a bit crowded." Diana wanted to make the marriage work but at the same time admitted, that she does not expect to become queen. "The establishment that I married into has decided that I'm a non-starter...I'd like to be the queen of people's hearts, in people's hearts, but I don't see myself being queen of this country."
She then went on to say the establishment had a resentment against her due to the fact she was more popular with the people than Charles. She said the resentment turned into "fear" and they saw her as a "threat of some kind".
She followed by saying: "I think every strong woman in history has had to walk down a similar path, and I think it's the strength that causes the confusion and the fear. Why is she strong? Where does she get it from? Where is she taking it? Where is she going to use it? Why do the public still support her?"
Diana says she was in love with James but was "very let down" when he published his book. "It was very distressing for me that a friend of mine, who I had trusted, made money out of me. I really minded about that. He'd rung me up 10 days before it arrived in the bookshops to tell me that there was nothing to worry about, and I believed him, stupidly."
Becoming a Princess at 19 was very hard on Diana. She said the Royal Family never appreciated anything she did. "Anything good I ever did nobody ever said a thing, never said, Well done.'...But if I tripped up, which invariably I did, because I was new at the game, a ton of bricks came down on me. This was a contributing factor to her bulimia and several attempts to injure herself.
Her reply to whether Charles understood her problems or not was a simple "No." In a recent documentary, Diana: In Her Own Words, she said she was asked by a reporter if she was in love [during her engagement interview]. Charles replied with 'Whatever in love means' which understandably, broke Diana's heart. The interview can be found here [Skip to 7:30].
After the announcement of their divorce in 1996, Diana said the "agendas" of everyone around the royal family changed. "I was a liability. How are we going to deal with her?' " She said palace officials even blocked her public engagements and made sure that "letters" to her "got lost".
The theories of what actually happened...

Apparently Diana was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash which is strange as she always wears it and has been pictured numerous times with or putting a seatbelt on.
CCTV images
Mohammed Fayed (father of Dodi) stated in 2003 that there were around ten CCTV cameras on the route taken by Diana that night, including one to the entrance of the tunnel itself, but coincidentally. there were no recordings of any of these. The Independent also stated in 2006 that there are more than 14 CCTV cameras in the Pont de l'Alma underpass, but again, none recorded footage of the fatal crash
Ambulance
The crash happened at around 12:26am [local time] and the ambulance arrived at the scene almost 1 hour 15 minutes after the first call. In France, its standard procedure to send them with a fully-equipped team of nurses and doctors as fast as possible. If they had followed these rules, people say she would have been taken from the crash site and in surgery in around 30 minutes.
It gets stranger - the ambulance was apparently ordered to stop by Dr Martino because her injuries were getting worse. The entrance to the hospital was in sight and no more than 30 seconds away at the time they stopped. Some say they were actually making her injuries worse and she could have survived had they just taken her to the hospital in time. They actually arrived at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital at 2:06am. But some reports say the ambulance arrived at the scene at 12:40am and Dr Martino denies that he ever meant to harm her.
Embalmed
Mohamed Al-Fayed alleged that Diana's body was deliberately embalmed a very short time after her death to ensure that any pregnancy tests at the post-mortem would produce a false result.
Tunnel
Hours after the crash, they hosed down the tunnel and re-opened it within hours of the fatal car collision. Mercedes refused to look at the car and people believe that if the car had been tampered with, they would know straight away.
Henri Paul
The family of driver, Henri Paul ordered to have his blood sampled again and the results came back the same, In his system was a drug called 'Albendazole' which he was never prescribed by his doctor. He was however prescribed Acamprostate which wasn't even found in his system.
They found Carbon Monoxide in his system which is strange as in the CCTV footage they have in the Ritz, there is no sign of him being drunk or any signs you would see from breathing in Carbon Monoxide. It couldn't have been from after the car crash as his neck broke due to the impact so he wasn't able to breathe. This has lead many experts to believe this was not his blood and it was from a suicide victim which would explain the Carbon Monoxide.
White Fiat
When they were analysing the Mercedes after the crash, it showed that it had come into contact with a white Fiat as it left traces of paint on the Mercedes bodywork. Mohammed Fayed alleged that the vehicle was used by the "security services" to block the road in front of the Mercedes, resulting in the car swerving and crashing. The vehicle nor the driver was ever traced.
Dodi Fayed
Many believe it was Dodi who was meant to die. Diana could have been pregnant with Dodi's child and potentially about to get engaged. The Royal Family didn't want this to happen as he was a non-Christian so many believe the Royals planned it. Dodi's father believes that Prince Philip was the one who was in charge of the planned killing.
